Rodent Control - Mouse & Rat

Recognizing the signs of a rodent infestation is crucial. From droppings and gnawed wires to scratching noises in walls, these indicators signal the presence of these unwelcome guests. Beyond property damage, rodents pose serious health risks, carrying diseases such as rat-bite fever and allergens that trigger asthma.

Rodents have been introduced to New Zealand and pose a major risk to our environment, economy, health and wellbeing. There are three types of rats and one type of mouse in New Zealand.

- Norway or brown rat (Rattus norvegicus)
- Roof rat (Rattus rattus)
- Kiore or Polynesian rat (Rattus exculans)
- House mouse (Mus musculus)

Introduced centuries ago, these rodents have established themselves as significant risks, with the Norway rats arriving in the late 18th century followed by Ship rats and House mice, wreaking havoc alongside the native Kiori rats.

Rats and mice are prolific breeders

  • Mice can reach sexual maturity at 5 weeks of age and can have 5 to 10 litters a year containing 5 to 6 young each litter.

  • Rats reach sexual maturity in 2 to 5 months of age and can have 3 to 6 litters a year containing 7 to 8 young.

Their rapid reproduction exacerbates the challenges of controlling their populations.

How to prevent infestations:

 - Sealing entry points and eliminating food sources are essential.

 - Clearing away debris and sealing gaps in walls and plumbing help deter rodents from entering homes.

 - Additionally, proper food storage and waste management reduce attractions for these pests.

Despite preventive measures, infestations can occur, requiring intervention. Combining traps and baits can help control populations, but severe infestations may necessitate professional assistance.
